In 1984 the first AERO was shown to the public. The car was white and was fitted with a body kit called "airflow kit". The engine was a new version of the 2 litre turbo blown engine but with 16 valves and an Intercooler. The engine delivered 175 hp.

1985 the valve train was changed and now the engine could support unleaded gasoline. Now the SPG "Special Performance Group" was released to the rest of the world. The SPG had only 160 hp.

1987 a new front was introduced. Bigger headlights and the leaning front made the car a little more aerodynamic. The chassie was upgraded and the AERO got harder springs and shocks.

1988 The turbo became water-cooled, and the brakes were upgraded. The hubs, discs and callipers were taken from the larger SAAB 9000. A catalytic converter introduced on some models and the power was lowered to 160 hp. This version of the SAAB 900 AERO was called the 88-B. The SPG now got an 5 hp upgrade.

1989 All cars had now catalytic converters.

1990 The last year when the real SPG was made. And it got 175 hp. This became the "stealth".

1991 The SAAB 900 AERO cabriolet was introduced to the market.

1992 ABS brakes became standard.

1993 the last SAAB 900 AERO was made.
